The Bible and Prophecy Are To Follow A Literal Interpretation
Definition of literal = (Belonging to letters)
Literal interpretation involves an approach based on the actual words in their ordinary meaning... Not going beyond
the facts... Therefore literal interpretation means to explain the original sense of the Bible according to the normal
customary usage of its language. Literal interpretation of all literature (including the Bible) is the attempt to understand
what one is saying based upon what is written.
Allegorical or non-literal interpretation stands in contrast to literal interpretation. It attempts to interpret a passage
based upon an idea or understanding that is not found specifically in the text. Therefore allegorical (hidden or secret
meaning) imports a key idea from outside the passage as the basis for interpretation and is not found or supported
explicitly from the text.
Literal interpretation involves grammatical, historical, contextual interpretation. It is to commit oneself to a starting point,
and that starting point is to understand a document the best one can, in the context of the normal, usual, customary
traditional way of understanding anything else that you read.
Thus, a normal or literal reading of scripture will take into account figures of speech, and symbolism. While the Bible
does contain figures of speech and symbols, they were intended to convey literal truth. In general, however, the Bible
speaks in literal terms. And we must allow it to speak for itself.
Consider this: if the literal sense of a passage is rejected, who is to determine what the non-literal or spiritual sense
is since the normal rules of interpretation do not apply? What will and has resulted is discretionary interpretation. Every
persons fancy is his or hers own rule.
